putting the garden to bed
I got here so late, thinking I wouldn't have any seeds to save ~ SURPRISE...I got to save zinnia, marigolds, basil, squash(that was busted open and dried), peppers(late produce from my moms garden) Makayla made me these cute little envelopes to put them into. I'll just store them at the cabin while we're away because its so cool and dark in there!
Covering this garden bed in leaves for protection and wonderful nourishment. My plan is to fill this bed with sweet and regular potatoes next spring! A crop I don't have to be there for, but will reap many benefits.
We've been needing to cover the orchard with cardboard and woodchips, which will be so very lovely! When the area is covered and sat, this next summer(June) I'll plant pumpkins of all sorts. How exciting!! It's going to be a bit of a process to cover that large of an area. We started and got pretty far, with maybe a little less than half to go to finish. So far we have just three apple trees, with plans to add to!
Volunteer lettuce is coming up in the raised bed along with just a couple carrots. This spring I'll plant more carrots, since I won't really have to be there for them to grow. The spring weather and showers will grow them perfectly. I'm planning on planting garlic in the next couple weeks. Another crop that should do well in my absence. We'll see how these garden dreams go for me. You know I'm a helpless dreamer :)
Peace,
Lanie
