Building this back garden bed has been hard work but such a beautiful process. It had some fruit in it already ~ this year we added potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, some squash and blueberries after expanding it. We use the back to eden or what you would call deep mulch method. Using wood chips and straw. If using straw you need to use quite a bit so that it’s deep making it hard for seeds to germinate. This garden method is basically a model of the forest floor. Using wood chips to suppress weeds, hold in moisture, so there’s less watering, and to “top” it off it adds nutrients to the soil. Building the soil up with organic matter is key! We used some straw to cover the potatoes after letting them get to tall.
Spring has been good to us this year in many ways. The weather has been awesome. Its not been to much rain not to little.
Mary leaves us in August for collage. Everybody’s growing leaps and bounds! We lost a puppy to illness and got a new one a week later. Though it didn’t take away our sadness it helped make it better. Jade is an Australian Shepard and as sweet as can be. She’s a feisty little thing that talks quite a bit of sass when reprimanded. We love her!
